Current understanding of the #rasuwa disaster shows a very large rock avalanche released from the valley north of #Langtang-Lirung. Parts of a #glacier were involved in the failure, likely contributing large amounts of water, though other water sources undoubtedly contributed. lnkd.in/p/eR3XUPkr

#GAPHAZ researchers from around the globe are rapidly looking into various data sources, including #seismic data and #satellite imagery, to try to identify the source of the #disaster. A #glacier is certainly involved, but unlikely to be the sole cause. #rasuwa www.newscientist.com/article/2586...

We are heartbroken 💔 to see the images and videos coming out of Nepal this morning. Initial footage suggests this was a hugely destructive event originating in glacierized terrain. Our thoughts are with all affected communities and emergency responders. #cryohazards #rasuwa #glaciers #hazards

The study presents an inventory of hanging glaciers in the Alaknanda basin (Garhwal Himalaya) and the authors performed runout simulations for select glaciers that could impact infrastructure. Their findings highlight the need for targeted monitoring and risk-informed planning.
